Read This Before You Get Braces

23 Aug 2015

Whether you are researching orthodontic treatment for yourself or for a loved one, the amount of information to read about and learn can be overwhelming. How do you know where to begin? I’ve written this series of blog articles to share some basic information about braces with you, along with tips and even pros/cons about the types of braces available to you.

All treatment options should be discussed by your orthodontist with you during your initial consultation. After educating you on your options, he or she should help you make the right decision on a treatment to fit for your lifestyle. Here are a few questions you may want to review prior to your appointment.

• Do you prefer braces that are as comfortable as possible?
• How long can you expect treatment time to be?
• Does the length of time vary from one type of braces to the next?
• Do you prefer that the braces are easy to take care of?
• How extensive will treatment need to be for your particular case?
• Do you prefer invisible braces?
• Will your insurance cover most of the cost of braces?
• Are flexible payment options available?

Based on your answers to these questions, your orthodontist should have a pretty good idea of what treatment option is best for you. Next, I’d like to briefly introduce you to each option. Please keep in mind that this is a very general list of popular treatments, so not all may be available at your orthodontist of choice. At Lucas Orthodontics we are proud to offer all of the below mentioned types of braces for treatment.

An Overview of Different Styles of Braces

Traditional Metal Braces – the most common type of braces made of gold or silver brackets. This option is often the only option for those patients with severely misaligned teeth. They are strong and affordable.
Ceramic braces – a more subtle style of braces designed to blend in with your teeth. Product advancements have made them more dynamic and less prone to stain, which they may have been in years past.
Lingual braces – a less common choice of braces where the brackets are cemented to the backs of the teeth.
Invisalign® – a clear plastic tray option chosen by people who want extreme discretion with their braces.
