Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Invisalign?
25 Jun 2021
While Invisalign corrects a great many dental alignment concerns, there are some that need other orthodontic treatment. So who is not a good candidate for Invisalign? A good orthodontist who is also an Invisalign specialist will be able to evaluate and determine what procedure is best for their patient. Either Invisalign or another type of procedure.
Dr. Lucas and the staff at Lucas Orthodontics is a preferred Invisalign provider. They have the knowledge and experience to determine if Invisalign is for you. Additionally, Dr. Lucas has experience with a variety of orthodontic techniques and will be more than able to find the right procedure to make your smile great.
When Invisalign Isn’t the Right Choice
Invisalign corrects a wide range of alignment issues, but severe overbites and underbites usually need another type of orthodontic treatment because often the jaw itself needs adjustment. Additionally, patients with severe misalignment of their teeth may need another type of orthodontic treatment. While not an outright disqualifier, patients with TMJ, implants, or bridges often find Invisalign difficult. If a patient has cavities or active gum disease, these concerns should be corrected prior to Invisalign treatment.
The best candidates for Invisalign are those with healthy teeth and gums with slightly crooked teeth and some minor gaps. Though increasingly, Invisalign is being used successfully for more and more misalignment concerns. Contacting an orthodontist with Invisalign experience is your best option to determine if you’re a candidate.

Smile Assessment
While no replacement for an orthodontic exam, Invisalign offers the Smile Assessment test to help see if you qualify for Invisalign. It’s rather simplistic, but it can give you an idea. Though, an orthodontist who specializes in Invisalign would be able to provide a more in-depth evaluation to determine if Invisalign is for you. In addition, they would be able to provide recommendations for another type of treatment, if necessary.
An orthodontist would set up an initial consult in which they would obtain a current 3D scan of your teeth. Also, they will perform an oral examination. Once the examination is complete, the orthodontist would be able to explain your treatment options and whether Invisalign is the right choice for you.
